Outlook 2016 Windows Manual Setup for POP3

You can use POP3 or IMAP with Outlook accounts if you don’t want to use Microsoft Exchange. This page explains how to set up MS Outlook 2016 on a Windows system to send and receive email for an email mailbox you have created using a PO3 connection. To set up an MS Outlook.com IMAP account in outlook, you will need to use the manual setup option.

You can use Outlook 2016 IMAP setup instructions to manually configure mailbox as IMAP.

  1. Start the Microsoft Outlook program
  • Open up Start Menu to start Outlook 2016. If you have never used MS Outlook before then it will prompt you to create a new account. If this occurs, then skip ahead to step 2.
  • If you have used Outlook previously then it doesn’t prompt you, click the File tab and then Add Account button.

  • When this window appears, leave the spaces empty and choose the Manual setup or additional server types option and then click Next.

  • Choose POP or IMAP, then click Next.
  1. The “POP and IMAP Account Settings” window appears
  • This window is where you will enter most of your account settings.
  1.  View “More Settings”
  • Click the More Settings button. A new “Internet E-mail Settings” window appears.
  1. Choose the “Outgoing Server” tab
  • In the “Outgoing Server” tab, check the option for My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and make sure Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
  1. Choose the “Advanced” tab

Click the “Advanced” tab, then:

  • Change both the Use the following type of encrypted connection settings to TLS.
  • Change the Outgoing server (SMTP) port number from 25 to 465.
  1. Close the “Internet E-mail Settings” window
  • Click OK to close the “Internet E-mail Settings” window. The “Add New Account” window will still be visible.
  1. Test the settings.
  • Click Next. Outlook should tell you that “all tests completed successfully”.
  1. Finish the wizard.
  • Close the “Test Account Settings” window if it is still open to continue.
  • Click Finish to finish the wizard.
